Sun tape library family consists of three main product segments; enterprise-midrange (SL8500, SL3000,L1400), distributed(SL500) and workgroup (SL24/SL48). The followings will give you more detailed idea about the main characteristics of each product.

SL8500: The top of the line, StorageTek™ SL8500 modular library system is designed for the enterprise datacenter of today and tomorrow. The SL8500 library has significant innovations in consolidation and high availability, while remaining eco-responsible and providing the latest encryption technology. The SL8500 library makes consolidation simpler with its StorageTek Any Cartridge Any Slot™ technology to provide seamless mixed media. The HandBot High Performance Robotics™ work in parallel to minimize queuing, even in the largest consolidated, enterprise environments. Redundant robotics and power supplies can be replaced while the library continues to operate. Slots, drives, and additional robotics to handle the increased workload can be added while continuing to operate. SL3000: Finally, a midrange library that offers uncompromising scalability, connectivity, and choice— key contributors to affordable growth. StorageTek SL3000 modular library system doesn’t dictate your choices, you’re free to design storage the way you really want it. “With Any Cartridge Any Slot™” technology, you can use the drive types that make sense for your access and storage needs. “The Real Time Growth™” capability enables you to install physical capacity in advance and tap into it incrementally, with “Capacity on Demand” license keys. L1400: StorageTek™ L1400 tape library, with an evolutionary design that capitalizes on the successful StorageTek™ L700e* tape library, helps to expand storage capacity seamlessly with its StorageTek Continuous Capacity™ technology. L1400 scales no disruptively within each frame and minimizes downtime while upgrading capacity. Partitioning enables to share the library with up to six different hosts or backup applications using partitions that are easily added or changed, reducing the number of tape libraries to manage and the time it takes to manage them. The L1400 tape library also provides valuable monitoring capabilities that improve backup success.

SL500: The StorageTek™ SL500 modular library system is designed to make backup simple. Simple to own -built with highly reliable components borrowed from the enterprise StorageTek™ SL8500 modular library system. Simple to operate - all major parts, including the robotics, are field replaceable in under 30 minutes. Simple to grow - additional drive and cartridge expansion modules install easily and provide 40% more capacity than other libraries. The SL500 fits in a standard 19” rack and is ideal for consolidation, reducing management costs, software licenses and maintenance costs. It makes backup simple!.

SL24/SL48: The StorageTek™ SL24 tape autoloader is an entry-level solution that combines large capacity and robust features in the compact form of a tape autoloader. It is designed to be simple to use and service, supporting a broad variety of servers, operating systems and ISV packages. Offering 24 slots and a choice of interfaces and drives, the SL24 Tape Autoloader is perfect for replicated systems or first time users. The StorageTek™ SL48 tape library is a reliable entry-level LTO library that can handle backup and recovery jobs sometimes assigned to larger libraries, but is simple enough to allow for quick upgrades and service.
